KOURTNEY KAWANO (US)
Kourtney (she/her) is a wahine ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian woman) and a PhD candidate in the social sciences and comparative education division of UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. Born on Moku o Keawe (Hawaiʻi Island) and raised in Nānākuli and Kapolei on the island of Oʻahu, Kourtney’s lived experiences with culture-based education deeply inform her interest in Indigenous knowledge systems and the intersections of schooling, culture, and society. She is a 2024 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellow and an educational coach for Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian) college students in the University of Hawai‘i system.
